As we're all having to stay at home, we've decided to launch a weekly mix series featuring some of our friends. As you're listening to these mixes, feel free to show some love to our artists if you can of course. To kick off our series, we asked LA's favorite spiral @thesaddestangel for a sweet mix to listen to while working out, cooking up your abuela's recipe or for that sweet perreo in your room. Please see below for ways to show some love to sweet @thesaddestangel if you're inclined <3 Stay safe and healthy bbs <3 PJ: Tell us about this mix & where you want it to take people. Fall in love to this mix by Toronto's sweetheart @karimolenash . We're excited Karim will be DJing our upcoming Papi Valentine 2 on 2/14/20 in Brooklyn, NY! Read our sweet Q&A below and enjoy this beautiful mix <3 PJ: Tell us about this mix & where you want it to take people KOA: This mix was heavily inspired by the energy of romance on the dance floor. I wanted to translate the same feelings of butterflies and lust that you feel when you lock eyes with that someone at the club and you know it’s about to be a situation. In this mix you’ll find odes to some of my musical influences of classic house, disco, ballroom, club, rnb and techno. You’ll also see many of the producers I respect and love in this mix. This mix is for the dancers, the stompers who walk every sidewalk like it’s a runway and most of all, the lovers on the dance floor PJ: What’s an ideal night out in Toronto look like? KOA: Ooo.. and ideal night in toronto??? Anywhere with my friends tbh. They’re the best. I guess specifically... throwing a pep rally with @chippynonstop then after a cute AP to decompress and kiki PJ: Who are you obsessed with on IG right now? KOA: Always and forever obsessed with MY QUEEN, SERENA WILLIAMS. PJ: You just landed in NYC for the weekend — what’s your first destination? KOA: First stop to see my girl Hannah, second stop wherever I can get a cute cocktail.
WE ASKED UK MEGABABE MANARA TO FIX US A MIX AHEAD OF HER SET AT FREAK PAPI ON DECEMBER 13 IN BROOKLYN NEW YORK. GET IT GOING IF YOU FEELING GOOD!
Enjoy this new mix from our ravey and wavy Chicago baby @ARIELZETINA ahead of Papi Dreams on Friday October 18th in Brooklyn. We caught up with Ariel in Chicago with a few questions of our own. PJ: What would be your favourite venue, past or present, to DJ at? AZ: My dream is to go on Rihanna’s world tour and hit Jacksonville, FL (I grew up right outside of it) and Belize City, Belize (where my mom’s family is from)! PJ: You just DJ’d four nights in a row — what are you up to on your day off? AZ: I kept telling everyone I pretty exclusively spent August and September trying out new recipes, watching ANTM, and making music while I wasn’t deejaying! Recently I’ve been watching lots of cute anime when I’m not deejaying though. PJ: Whats your favourite environment to produce music in? AZ: I produce almost all of my music from my bedroom studio. I think there is a privacy and intimacy I can achieve there. But I think I might feel differently if I had my own studio because having a bedroom studio comes with lots of challenges. PJ: Thoughts on deep dish pizza? AZ: So thin crust is actually the true authentic Chicago pizza!! Most deep dish is awful and unseasoned but I really like Pequod’s, it’s definitely the deep dish that goes all the way off. ENJOY OUR LATEST MIX FROM OUR DEAR FRIEND @FRESHPRINCEDABAHIA FROM OUR SISTERS IN SAO PAULO @BATEKOO <3 RECORDED EXCLUSIVELY FOR PAPI JUICE VOL.49: PAPI PARADISE. CHECK OUT THE SWEET INTERVIEW BELOW <3 PJ: Can you tell our community a little bit about yourself? And Batekoo? F: I founded BATEKOO in Salvador, as a socio-cultural movement with high potential for structural transformation. I helped to develope language, identity, visual, musical and conceptual identity, expand it to 7 Brazilian states. Today I live in São Paulo and I'm the creative director and brand content manager. I like to combine my work with BATEKOO with other professions such as dj, producer, art director and styling. And here's our Batekoo bio: With a mix of Brazilian funk, hip hop, and many other Afro-diasporic rhythms, Salvador-born party collective BATEKOO are creating revolutionary, rebellious spaces for marginalised communities in Brazil. They stand tall and unafraid in the midst of a political atmosphere brimming with homophobia, one that constantly attempts to frighten young LGBTQ+ and black Brazilians into silence. Founded in late 2014, BATEKOO quickly spread beyond the clubs of Bahia and the North East of Brazil, soon becoming icons of the São Paulo party scene. Their goal has been clear from inception – to unapologetically reclaim space and centre the voices of those marginalised, whose sound and culture have been exploited, looked down upon and exoticised for decades. “We are proud to be able to show the world that Brazil is not only what the media is focused on,” they explain. Instead, BATEKOO are creating structural change one party at a time, tackling issues of inaccessibility and offering a space of not just representation but also of community, understanding, resistance, and celebration. PJ: Where do you see this mix taking people? F: BATEKOO is about dancing as you please and not caring about judgments, the idea of our music is to make people express themselves through their bodies and identities. PJ: What’s your favorite thing about New York been so far? F: My favorite part about New York I think is the whole city and how it resembles Brazil for several reasons. The black and latin cultural scene that is so strong here. The black and marginal identities of the city, the amount of non-white people in general, the way people express themselves all seem like a movie, so really in love. PJ: What's your favorite snack after the club? F: Pizza would be very private, I like Caribbean food, but I would like it with a little less spice hahahaha
